FIRST LOOK: Original One Mini Driver | TaylorMade Golf

In 1979, a golf club dubbed the Pittsburgh Persimmon hit the scene like a bolt of lightning and changed the game forever. It was TaylorMade Golf’s first-ever metalwood, offering breakthrough tech that helped golfers hit it further and straighter. It marked a giant leap forward in a creative innovation philosophy that still guides TaylorMade to this day.

Fast forward 40 years and TaylorMade is paying homage to the one that started it all to celebrate it’s 40th anniversary. Say hello to the Original One Mini Driver.

TaylorMade launched the new metalwood on Tuesday and it’s a beauty.

First off, as you’d expect, it’s smaller than the conventional driver. But at 275cc, don’t let its size fool you. This mini driver is packed with technology.

OSN08887.jpgDrawing from the past 40 years of innovation, the Original One Mini Driver has key product technologies found in TaylorMade’s most notable metalwoods, including Twist Face Technology, Speed Pocket, Inverted Cone Technology and a 2° adjustable loft sleeve. It all adds up to a sleek, powerful and forgiving metalwood unlike anything seen before.

The Original One Mini Driver features tri-material construction with a titanium body, a 50-gram sole plate and the popular matte carbon crown found in the new M5 & M6 driver.

By now you’re probably wondering where this new metalwood fits in your game. But if you’re the kind of golfer who wants more options off the tee, this is the one (no pun intended) for you. The OOMD is designed to give you the control and accuracy of a fairway wood off the tee but with more distance and forgiveness. When faced with a tight tee shot, you can reach for the OOMD knowing you have a safety valve in the bag that won't sacrifice distance.

This bad boy is also ideal for golfers with faster swing speeds to use off the deck. The club’s ultra-low center of gravity and medium face depth gives it great playability from fairway lies.

The club is now available for pre-order, and will hit stores on May 1. It comes in 11.5° and 13.5° lofts and comes stock with Mitsubishi Diamana F Limited shafts in 55g (R), 65g (S) and 75g (X) flexes. The club costs $399.99.

What an absolutely stunning club. The black crown mixed with the carbon fiber look is outstanding. This club may be the perfect fit for me gap wise to be able to reach more par 5s in 2. Off the tee I could see this being a long, control club to find more fairways when too long will result in trouble. Paying homage to the original Pittsburgh persimmon in such a great, new, modern look. This is looking to be set up as a huge hit for TM!

@SteveBreazeale - what does the headcover look like?

Love the look of this driver - a great update and dedication to old school drivers. Can't hit my TM driver off the deck, so would be interesting to get a feel for how the Original One performs in those situations, as well as off the tee. Nice work!

That is amazing first look. Thanks for sharing the amazing golf drivers for us.

Are you making any left handed minis ?? 🤞

@BuckClark - they will be offering LH in both lofts according to the specs on the TM site.

I am really digging that black front edge with the carbon fiber crown. We’ve been so used to the white and silver over the past years which is a great look, but this color scheme is too good.

Hoping there are more offerings like this in future TM releases.

Club at address looks great!

@rbauchman same here with driver off the deck. I find I’m maxed out from the fairway with my 3 wood and the Original

One should definitely help me squeeze out a few more yards on those long par 5s to get home in 2.

@MCGolfTM You could probably play The Original One from tee to green on long par 5s, although probably shouldn't replace the Spider. I agree with you on the look of the crown at address - a nice change up from the white/silver/black (nothing wrong with that though).

@SteveBreazeale how about "The Original One 1 club challenge!" Smiley LOL

clydetackett

Is this about the same size as the 3 Wood?

@clydetackett - the mini driver will be larger than the fairway. For comparison, the M5 3 Wood is 161cc and the Original One Mini Driver is 275cc.

I have been hoping Taylormade would come out with another mini driver with newer tech incorporated  I cannot wait to try this one out!!
