Introducing TaylorMade P790 Irons Ft. SpeedFoam Technology

by Community Manager

After extensive testing and player feedback, we're proud to formally introduce P790 irons.

A breakthrough in iron technology, P790 is a beauty and a beast — the beauty of forged construction in a clean shape while also featuring an injection of revolutionary SpeedFoam Technology to make it a distance beast. It's the longest addition to the P·700 series of irons.

SpeedFoam is our latest proprietary technology that serves the dual purpose of generating ball speed while also dampening vibrations to create optimal sound and feel. SpeedFoam is literally injected into the club head in liquid form before it is quickly capped so it can expand within the club, providing increased face support and damping properties that maintain the forged sound and feel that all golfers want. In the past, that sound and feel came with a massive sacrifice in distance and forgiveness, but SpeedFoam allows for the best of both worlds.

Getting even more technical, P790 irons are constructed of a soft 8620 carbon steel body combined with a high-strength forged 4140 carbon steel wrapped-face. The wrapped-face construction creates a cut-thru Speed Pocket on the sole for extreme flexibility in the lower part of the clubface. This gives P790 a level of speed, forgiveness, and consistency not typically seen in a forged iron.

Another contributor to P790's consistency is an ultra-thin 1.75mm face with re-engineered Inverted Cone Technology (ICT). ICT was one of our biggest breakthroughs in driver technology which helped propel us to the #1 Driver in Golf. The revamped, smaller Inverted Cone found in P790 allows reduced face thickness at the edges of the clubface, creating more flexibility from heel to toe and low on the face—again, more flexibility for more consistent speed.

Lastly, P790 irons feature strategically placed internal metal-injection-molded (MIM) tungsten weighting for precise CG placement and higher moment of inertia (MOI). This helps with playability with more forgiveness on off-center hits and better-optimized launch and spin conditions throughout the entire iron set.

“With P790, we created a forged iron that meets the demands of discerning players and delivers distance performance never before seen in a players iron. By combining our new SpeedFoam Technology with a clean, classic design, we have effectively engineered an iron that is as beautiful as it is powerful — setting the new standard for all-around iron performance.”

They're offered in 3-PW, AW and come equipped with True Temper’s Dynamic Gold 105 steel shafts for $1,299 or UST Mamiya’s Recoil 760/780 ES SmacWrap graphite shafts for $1,499. Or, as always, we'll offer 15+ no-charge upgraded shafts through our TaylorMade Custom Shop.

These look awesome. I can't wait to demo these and the rest of the new 'P' line-up. The best keeps getting better!

I am new to your community, but have played Taylormade products for 15 years and love the their clubs. I am interested in the P790 clubs, but recall that several club manufacturers ( Cobra comes to mind) tried this technology in drivers several years ago with mixed results. I recall the foam breaking down after long use resulting in a dead feel to the club and loss of performance. How does Taylormade address the issue of foam breaking down in the cavity or delamination of the foam skin from the metal interface?

@NAR Our foam is a flexible polyurethane foam that remains flexible.  It never will become rigid and brittle like foams used in the past like you're referencing here. It has great adhesion properties as well so it will not delaminate either.

just a suggestion coming from numerous chats online this week about these.  Somehow the information that these are NOT a blade needs to be relayed to the consumers.  I am sure that once the customers hit them the will understand where they fit, but right now many seem to have them confused with a blade iron and even not understanding that these are the most forgiving of the 700 series.

Just a suggestion from someone fielding a bunch of questions for TM daily.

Hey Drew,

Much appreciate the insights and you helping educate what the purpose of this iron is. We're doing all we can to try and combat that P790 is a traditional blade. It's tough because it looks so much like a blade. Like you said, people will just need to hit them. We're confident as people start experiencing them first hand and can hit them at demo events, word will spread pretty quick. We'll keep thinking on how to better communicate their forgiveness in the meantime.

Oh boy!  When I saw the P790 irons it was love at first sight!!!  These irons are exactly what I am after; blade looking but packed with technology.

When can I preorder P790s? Looking to add a 2 and 3i to my set of P770s. Thanks fellas, keep up the good work!

You can pre order full sets starting 9/1. Purchasing individual long irons might be available at that time but most likely won't be available until a later date yet to be determined.
