I'd recommend if anything buying something to try the game out. I work for Worldwide Golf Shops and at least at the branch that I work for we have a massive used selection of clubs, some even as cheap as about $20. So I'd say get one of those to just see about going to the range to see if you want to continue playing golf. If not, then you've only lost a small investment. If so, then I'd recommend getting a starter set to give you the chance to play with a full set without spending a lot of money. Some sets are less expensive than even getting a single new club. Then, if you want to continue playing, start saving up for some newer clubs.

When I first got into the game, I wanted to find a really cheap set so I could see whether I wanted to continue the game while I practiced. I found a $20 full set of clubs with a bag at a local garage sale. The set actually did pretty well for me for the first few months. Once I started, I was hooked and quickly started to invest into my first real set of TaylorMade clubs. I ended up putting together RBZ driver, RocketBladez irons, and some ATV wedges. My set has come a long way since then, but what a difference the investment made back then.
